TfL advises of weeknight closures of the southbound Blackwall Tunnel between 25-28 June
Southbound traffic will need to seek alternative routes overnight on 25-28 June after 23:00 each evening to support highway works on the new Silvertown Tunnel, which opens in 2025
Northbound traffic will not be affected by the closures, and bus route 108 will continue to run in both directions through the night
Overnight weekday closures will help reduce the need for future weekend closures to the Blackwall Tunnel later this year
Transport for London (TfL) is advising drivers that the Blackwall Tunnel will be closed overnight to southbound traffic between 25-28 June to help support carriageway works on the northbound Blackwall Tunnel approach.
Following recent successful weekend closures to the tunnel, these closures, which are required to help implement the road configuration for the new Silvertown Tunnel which will open in 2025, will help reduce the need for future weekend closures later in the year. The closure is required as the works cannot be safely carried out with traffic passing by given its location.
The closures will all start at 23:00, with southbound traffic being restored by 05:00. There will also be overnight lane restrictions to the northbound carriageway on 18-22 June from 22:00 to 05:00. Further information about the closures can be found at www.tfl.gov.uk/blackwall-tunnel
Drivers of HGVs, as well as vans more than two metres in height or weighing more than two tonnes, are advised to consider routes away from central London during these closures where possible. To help inform drivers, additional variable messaging signs will be placed on the main roads approaching the Blackwall Tunnel. TfL has also worked with third party app providers, such as Waze, to help ensure drivers who regularly use the Blackwall Tunnel are alerted to the southbound closure and that the closure is shown in any route-planning over the weekend. The route 108, the only bus route that operates through the Blackwall Tunnel, will not be affected by the overnight works and will be escorted through the tunnel to allow it to operate throughout the night.
The forthcoming weekend closure of the southbound Blackwall Tunnel will still take place from 00:01 on Saturday 29 June until 05:00 on Monday 1 July.
